Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print Art
This Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Toshusai Sharaku features a kabuki actor in character. The character is a woman wearing a light gray kimono with blue patterns, possibly shibori patterns. This piece is titled 'Segawa Kikunojo III as O-Shizu the Wife of Tanabe Bunzo'. Actors who play female roles in kabuki are called onnagata. The print is mounted on thick paper and folded in two, with an opening at the top. An English label with explanations is on the inside. This piece is an authentic woodblock print, but it is a reprint, not a first edition.
Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
