Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll

Hand-crafted and in a dark wood color, this sturdy, slender box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits flush on the top. This specific box has no inscriptions. There is a sticker pasted inside the box.

Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
