Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This antique Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) represents a kagami mochi, a traditional Japanese New Year decoration consisting of mochi (rice cakes) topped with a Japanese orange on a wooden stand. There is a mouse in the foreground. This piece is signed with a name.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
