Vintage Japanese Wooden Decorative Plaque
This vintage Japanese wooden decorative ema plaque features a picture of an inuhariko (a dog representing good luck, protection and wealth), a daruma doll and other items. It has characters on the right and the name of the shrine on the bottom left. It is an ema plaque to commemorate the hatsu mairi, the first visit to a shrine for newborns. At the back, there are spaces to write the date of the visit, the birth date, the people accompanying, the name and the address of the person visiting the shrine. The plaque has a purple braided cord.
Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto shrines, and sometimes Buddhist temples, on which worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
