Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll
Hand-crafted and a medium brown color, this sturdy, slender wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits loosely on the top. Inside are two adjustable carved brackets meant to secure a scroll in place.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
