This is an antique Japanese hand-painted piece of traditional Japanese erotic art. It depicts a man and a woman in vibrant, colorful kimono in an intimate scene. The picture is expertly painted on delicate silk fabric.
Shunga is Japanese erotic art made traditionally by ukiyoe woodblock printing methods on paper and, more expensively, painted on silk fabric. Though these types of images and books are associated with general art as well as personal entertainment, the images in shunga were also used as an educational tool for youth and young married couples.
