Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting
This Japanese shikishi art board is a printed reproduction representing a person wearing red mountain clothing in the snow. The person is holding a huge daruma figurine in one hand, and a takehebi, a bamboo articulated snake, on the other. Mount Fuji covered by snow is pictured at the back. This shikishi is signed with a name and a red seal, and it is stored in a plastic sleeve. There is a paper with explanations in Japanese on the back.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
