Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (called kakejiku or makimono) features a landscape with high mountains and trees. There are flying birds, and a river with some houses in the foreground. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, meaning mountains and water. It is painted in black. This piece is titled and signed with a name and a red seal. There is a label with the title and the name of the artist on the outside of the scroll.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
