Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features calligraphy of five big Japanese characters, or kanji, written vertically. The first character is 福 fuku, meaning happiness or fortune. This piece is signed with a sign and red seals. It is likely a scroll related to Zen.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
