Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, from Atami, Shizuoka. This beige bell is in the shape of a warrior in armor, wearing a tall black hat and carrying arrows on its back. It has a small clay ball inside, a braided white string attached, two tags, and a metal bell.
Derei is a red string attached to the top, and there is a white clay ball inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
