Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. Representing the animals of the zodiac, this bell is in the shape of a chicken or rooster. It is mostly white with a yellow and red head, gray tail feathers, and subtle gold accents. It has a small white clay ball inside and has a simple white string tied on the tail.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
