Antique Japanese Pottery Sake Bottle Tokkuri
This is an antique Japanese ceramic sake bottle, Kayoi-Tokkuri. It achieved fame in the Edo period as a liquor store rental container. It was then that sake consumption increased significantly. Brewers would ship the sake to stores via wholesalers, and customers would buy it in this bottle. Inscriptions on the body can include the name of the liquor store, its location, and a trademark. The bottle says soy sauce, so it may have been used as a soy sauce container.
