Vtg Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Scroll

This Japanese vintage paper hanging scroll (Owakigake) represents the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi also known as Kukai, founder of the Shingon school. The monk is sitting on a chair and holds a prayer bracelet and a kongosho, a ritual Buddhist object, in his hands. This scroll is an icon displayed in Japanese Buddhist home altars, Butsudan. It is a powerful religious image, aimed to be at the center of an altar. This Owakigake is yellow and red with with brown floral details.
