Vintage Japanese Paper Mache Noh Mask
This is a vintage Japanese paper mache noh mask (noh-men). This character is the face of a man named Hyottoko. This character is a man with a twisted, puckered mouth off to one side and a scarf tied around his head. He is said to be a comical character and often paired with Okame which is the female equivalent. In many performances, Hyottoko plays the role of a clown.
This particular mask is unique, covered in a pinkish chirimen silk fabric and painted over with details. It has no holes for a string, but instead a wooden piece where the performer can hold the mask up with their mouth. The inside of the mask is lines with some sort of aluminum tape or paper.
