Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a landscape with high mountains with trees and a river. Some houses are pictured next to the river. There is a man sitting in one of the buildings, contemplating the river. This type of kakejiku is called sansui in Japanese, meaning mountains and river. There are inscriptions at the top left part of the image. This piece is signed with a name and red seals.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
