Antique Japanese Lacquerware Lidded box Fumibako Gobunshobako
This is an antique Japanese lacquered wooden letter box, Ofumibako. This letter box has the classic black and gold style with beautiful maki-e floral designs on the sides of the lid and of the box. The lid is adorned with a four-petal gold flower on the top. The front of the lid is decorated with metal embellishments. Ofumibako is one of the Buddhist altar items used to store letters written by Rennyo Shonin of the Hongwanji Temple. It is usually kept in the drawer at the bottom of the Buddhist altars.

- Good condition considering its age. Marks and scratches. Discoloration on the maki-e. One corner of the box damaged (some space between the wood). Light damages on the lid. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos.
