Japanese Katagami is a stencil pattern for dying textiles used for printing Kimonos. This antique Katagami was designed in Central Japan during the mid- or late Edo period (1860) to the early Meiji period (1900). It is made of two or more layers of handmade mulberry paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. Katagami printing uses a technique called resist dyeing, in which a paste is applied to the fabric with the katagami before dipping it in ink. The open space on the katagami will be a negative space in the printed design.
