Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Cover for Hanging Scroll Box
Hand-crafted and coated in a dark brown lacquer, this side-opening box is made for housing a hanging scroll box (kakejiku hako). These unique boxes help protect the scroll boxes as well as look aesthetically pleasing to the eye when stacked on shelves.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
