Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll

Hand-crafted and in a natural wood color, this sturdy, slender box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits flush on the top. It has two carved wooden brackets attached to the inside used to keep a scroll in place. This specific box has characters on inside and outside the lid. It used to store a Buddhist scroll.

Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
