Japanese Shikishi Art Board
This vintage Japanese shikishi art board features an oshie-zaiku (Japanese patchwork) design of two small white mice with a lucky hammer (uchi de no kozuchi). This particular image represents the zodiac. Mice are also associated with Daikokuten, one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods. Daikokuten typically carries this legendary hammer. Oshie-zaiku gives a unique 3D appearance, and different textures and patterns of silk fabric add extra dimension.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper: calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
