Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) represents an old couple consisting of an old man and an old woman. The couple is standing next to a Japanese matsu pine tree, and some animals symbolizing longevity, such as a turtle and two flying cranes, are also pictured. The scroll base has a beautiful gold floral pattern. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
