Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features mountains in the background, a river, and some houses. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, literally mountains and water. It is painted with black ink and features text at the top. This piece is signed and has red seals. There are inscriptions on the outside of the scroll.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
