Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features two birds sitting on a pine tree with some beautiful flowers at the bottom. The birds are blue, orange, and black, and have a long tail and a crest. The pine tree is painted in black ink, and the flowers, likely camellia or roses, are white, red, and yellow with green leaves. This type of scroll is called kacho, literally birds and flowers. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
