Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei 

This is a pair of vintage Japanese clay bells or dorei. Each representing a face, this pair consists of a woman's face, or okame, and a man's face with his mouth skewed, called hyottoko in Japanese. Each has a small ball inside and they are attached thank to a braided light brown string tied at the top. There are characters on the back.

Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
