Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. It is in the shape of a Daruma with a screaming face. The face has a textured, hand-sculpted surface, and the body is round and smooth. It has two openings: one is the open mouth and the other is on the back, which are set horizontally. There is an inscription on the side. This particular one is mostly red, with a brown face and white eyebrows. A gold-and-white braided cord and a paper tag are attached at the top, and a white clay ball is inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
