Vtg. Japanese Lacquerware Lidded box Fumibako Gobunshobako

This is a vintage Japanese resin lacquer replica letter box, ofumibako. This letter box has the classic black and gold style with beautiful makie floral designs on the sides of the lid and of the box. The lid is adorned with a four-petal gold flower mon on the top. One side of the lid has two small mon symbols, one the same as the lid, the other a peony flower all in gold.  
Gobunshobako are one of the Buddhist altar items used to store letters, certificates, photos, charms, sutra prayer books, and other important items. It is usually kept in the drawer at the bottom of the Buddhist altar in one's home.
