Antique Japanese Vaginal Speculum
This is an antique Japanese brass metal vaginal speculum used during gynecological exams. It has the typical duckbill shape with open slots. There is a curved bolt between the handles with a nut to secure the device in an open position.
Brass medical tools were popular in the 1800s and very early 1900s due to their ease of being sterilized with alcohol or boiling water (before autoclaves), but fell out of favor with the introduction of stainless steel.
