Vintage Japanese Samurai Shinsaku Hanga Print
This is a small Shinsaku Hanga print by Utagawa Toyokuni. It shows a man dressed in traditional Japanese clothing reading an ancient scroll. The original woodblock print is from 1809.
Shinsaku Hanga can be considered the revival of the Ukiyoe genre. Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
