Japanese Wooden Thread Spool
This is a vintage Japanese spool, or itomaki, used to wind and store copious amounts of silk thread used in the production of kimono and other popular traditional textiles. The thread is simply wound around the frame like a modern bobbin. This item was used in tandem with a machine called "zakuri" which was typically hand-powered and spun silk thread with quick efficiency. These spools can also be repurposed as stands for vases and flower pots or other display items.
