Vtg Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Ceiling Part
This item is a large decorative part from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This piece acts as the interior ceiling of a home altar. It is stained a dark brown and brushed with a clear black lacquer. There is a flat plywood board on the back with a gold paper covering. While this is ideal for reconstructing a butsudan, it also makes a convenient organizing tray for things like beads and stamps, a decorative shelf for miniatures, or for DIY art projects.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
