Japanese Brushed Lacquer Lidded Fumibako Letter Box
This is a Japanese brushed lacquer wooden letter box (fumibako). It is traditionally used to store letters, small books, important documents, paper, and other stationary items. It is also often used for Buddhist items, such as altar prayer books, prayer beads, charms, and for incense storage.
This beautiful medium brown brushed lacquered box with a simple design was a commemorative gift to someone. There is a gold kanji inscription on the inside of the lid.
