Vintage Japanese Wooden Decorative Plaque

This vintage Japanese wooden souvenir plaque features a poem about traveling through mountain roads and relaxing in Japanese onsens by Japanese poet-monk Saigyo Hoshi. The poem is illustrated with onsen tamago, eggs cooked in the hot waters of onsen, and crabs cooking in the hot waters. It has inscriptions on the back. This plaque has a white and red braided cord and a small bell.

Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto shrines, and sometimes Buddhist temples, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
