Vtg Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Inner Temple
This item is a large decorative part from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This piece is the inner temple and the main feature of the altar. Typically it houses a statue and small scrolls at the back. It is a stunning piece with 3D carved wood pieces and decorations exactly as one might see in a real Japanese temple. Birds (Ho-oh), pine trees, plum blossoms, bamboo, and iris flower accents adorn this piece. There are small sliding doors on the very bottom to house butsugu items. This large butsudan piece is excellent for installing in a home or creating a custom butsudan.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
