Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll
Hand-crafted and in a light color, this sturdy and slender wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. Inside are two wooden brackets used for securing a scroll in place. There are Japanese inscriptions on the outside and the inside of the lid.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
