Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features calligraphy of a literary idiom attributed to Chinese Confucian philosopher called Mencius. One of the idiom's interpretation is "earthly advantage is more important than heavenly time, man's harmony is more important than earthly advantage". The scroll base is brown. This piece has a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
