Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features an illustration of two Japanese gods on the top and a vertical calligraped text on the bottom. The two gods, Okuninushi and Kotoshironushi, are pictured with their usual items. The caligraphed text is signed by the head of Shinto Taikyo, a Japanese shinto organization.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
