Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a black and white painting of a landscape with mountains in the background and trees as well as a wide river in the foreground. Some houses are also pictured. This type of painting is called sansui (literally mountains and water). The subtle border is dark green and has a floral pattern.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
