Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features two black and red barn swallows and a tree, likely a plum tree, bearing pink flowers. This type of scroll is called kacho, literally flowers and birds. This specific scroll is about Spring. The base features a floral green pattern. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
