Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features calligraphy of a Chinese poem (Kanshi poetry) by the Chinese poet Du Fu (or Toho in Japanese) called 'Climbing the Yueyang Tower' (登岳陽楼). This piece is titled and signed with names and red seals.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
