Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese boxed hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features calligraphy of a hundred characters for the kanji 寿 jyu longevity, written in different styles. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. The lid has inscriptions on the outside.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
