Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board
This item is a vintage Japanese shikishi art board. In the style of oshie zaiku, or padded silk, this piece features raised zodiac image of a red, black, and white rooster and hen with a shimmering sunset orange background. This particular piece was handcrafted at the Higashigawa Handicraft Workshop in Omi Hachiman, Shiga Prefecture and comes with its original cardboard cover. It is signed with red seals.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
