Japanese Wooden Wall Hanging Frame Tanzaku-kake w/Box

This is a vintage Japanese wooden wall hanging frame, Tanzaku-kake, with a Tanzaku. A Tanzaku is a long and narrow Shikishi used for painting and writing Japanese poems such as Haiku or Tanka. This Tanzaku features hand-written calligraphy and a landscape representing a house next to a river with black birds flying. This piece has two red seals. The shikishi is not glued to the wooden part, and it is secured with a string. The wooden part is carved with a bird shape and curves.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
