Japanese Shunga Ukiyoe Woodblock Print Reproduction
This is an album of Japanese vintage reproductions of a ukiyoe shunga woodblock print. It contains twelve shunga and dialogues between the couple in each shunga at the end.
Shunga is Japanese erotic art made traditionally by ukiyoe woodblock printing. Though these types of images and books are associated with general art as well as personal entertainment, the images in shunga were also used as an educational tool for youth and young married couples.
Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
