Vintage Japanese Zodiac Animal Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. It is in the shape of a tiger, one of the twelve animals in the Japanese zodiac (eto). It is white with gold stripes and black eyes and nose. It has a white clay ball inside and a braided red string cord tied at the top. There are inscriptions on the back.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
