Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, is in the shape of a tree trunk with a little tanuki (raccoon dog) head sticking out. The kanji on the bottom reads "Yamadera" (mountain temple) which is a scenic temple found in Yamagata Prefecture. There is a red string attached at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
