Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. It is round and features the image of a shachi on one side and a mon symbol on the other. Overall, the item is brown with some green to imitate the look of aged bronze. It also has a bright red string attached at the top. Shachi are fish-like creature often seen on rooftops to ward off fire. It is also a symbol of Nagoya. The kanji characters say "Nagoya Castle", so this item was likely a souvenir.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
