Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in the shape of a head (kashira). It also looks similar to a daruma and bears a striking resemblance to the green heads in Ghibli's Spirited Away. It is possible this is an interpretation for a karasu tengu, but it is unknown. On the back side is the kanji for Mt. Aso, a famous volcano in Kumamoto Prefecture. There is a faded purple string attached to the top, and there is a small brown clay ball inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
