Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. Representing the animals of the zodiac, this bell is in the shape of a small house with a painting of a dragon on one side. There is a red stamp that says "Good Fortune" on the front side and a handwritten "Kanazawa" on the back side. It has a small clay ball inside and has a red attached at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
