Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, is in the shape of an Awa Odori dancer. This is the women's outfit. Originating in Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Awa Odori is one of the most famous summer dance festival celebrations in all of Japan. There is a brown string attached at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
