Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Flower Vase
This is a metal flower vase, hanatate, for Buddhist altars. It is common to offer a range of seasonal and symbolic flowers in front of a Buddhist altar. It is also a vessel for Sakaki leaves or Shashagi leaves in Shinto. The meaning of offering sakaki tree leaves is that the gods living in the sakaki tree will protect the grave and the soul. This particular vase is brown and has a tube-like shape with a golden crane etched onto the front side. The golden crane is the Nichiren Shoshu sect mon symbol.
